What are the symptoms of a manual lever position sensor?

On a 92 Ford with an E4OD transmission what are the symptoms of a manual lever position sensor being out of adjustment? And where can I get the adjusting tool to fix it if it is out of adjustment?

The needle on the selector is on the wrong spot, gear. You can get it adjustment on the linkage.
