2010 Honda Insight hybrid

Hybrid technology is generally a good thing. We are all agreed. But the cleaning operation and environmentally responsible even though it may be, hybrid vehicles have been out of reach of all buyers, but also to heel. Most consumers simply are not willing to – or unable – to pay the $ 30,000 – $ 40,000 needed to get behind the wheel of a partial combustion of interior, the electric car part.

There are exceptions, of course. General Motors sedan Aura Greenline is reasonably priced, after all, and the Chev Malibu Hybrid, but terms of what you get for your money, hybrid vehicles have yet to attract consumers in a significant number …. younger, especially buyers.

Honda hopes to change that with the introduction of its second generation hybrid Insight. Priced below both the popular Civic Hybrid and Toyota Prius, which is to meet the newcomers and guests under 35 years, according to Honda manager of production planning in Canada, Ryan Kelly.

"The number of hybrid products in the market is six times higher than it was when first introduced the Insight, in 2000, observed in launch in Scottsdale. "And there are 38 times more of them on the road …. but few of them are being driven by younger buyers." So when it goes on sale this spring, the 2010 Honda Insight will be priced at a "sweet spot" around $ 20,000 or less, according to Ryan Kelly.

With technology fundamentally similar to that found in the current Civic Hybrid, the new Insight is expected to produce the fuel consumption of 4.8 l/100 km in town and a poor L./100 4.5 km on the road. These are better numbers as the Toyota Prius and only marginally lower than those delivered by the first generation Insight, which remains the champion of fuel consumption in Canada.

Like the original Civic and Insight, the new Insight will have a compact electric motor sandwiched between the motor vehicle internal combustion and a gearless CVT transmisison. The engine displaces 1.3 liters and the electric motor develops 10 kilowatts. Together they generate about 98 horsepower and 123 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine also features i-VTEC variable valve technology of Honda, Acceleration drive-by-wire, and is nearly identical to that found in the Civic Hybrid, if a bit less powerful. It is especially designed only for hybrid transmissions and what Honda calls a friction "lower" motor. Total production for the battery pack of nickel metal hydride 128-volt, and Honda claims to be a duration of 15 years or 240,000 km …. whichever comes first.

Management of combined battery, the electric motor and motor Gas Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA), which in this configuration, is stronger and lighter than that found in the original Civic or Insight. IPU (Intelligent Power Unit) for the new Insight is under the floor in the rear cargo area, along with the battery pack.
